English: Drawing by William Alexander, draughtsman of the Macartney Embassy to China in 1793. Portrait of the purveyor for the British Embassy to China in 1793, while the British Ambassador stayed at Macao. His external jacket is of sheep skin, with a collar of sable, or fox skin. Under this is worn a vest of silk. He wears a felt cap. The stockings are of nankeen, quilted on the inside with cotton. The shoes are likewise nankeen, with thick soles made of paper. From the girdle on the right side hangs a flint and steel, and knife sheath; on the left, purses for tobacco, or snuff. He carries a box containing sweetmeats, which he brought as a token of his regard for the persons of the Embassy. The background is a scene at Macao.
